About the Book

As a kid growing up in rural Alaska, trumpet teachers and opportunities to hear trumpeters were pretty scarce. I wrote All About Trumpet so that people interested in playing trumpet might have a source to learn good trumpet-playing habits, to learn about trumpet repertoire, and to learn about great trumpet recordings. The e-mails I've received from people all over the world who find the book valuable make me think that I've been successful in this endeavor.

That being said, you should still find a good teacher to study with. No book can teach you all you need to know, but I hope All About Trumpet helps you on your way.

This book is a pared-down version of an earlier book, Sound the Trumpet: How toSound the Trumpet: How to Blow Your Own HornBlow Your Own Horn. Because I believe in music, teaching and learning more than I believe in profit, Sound the Trumpet was available for free download in its entirety. I've given away over 220,000 digital copies of the book worldwide, making it the most popular trumpet book on the Internet. This earlier version of All About Trumpet has more information but no CD, though there are mp3 files posted on the web. In recording the CD for All About Trumpet, I was fortunate to draw on the incredible skill and talents of some of the best musicians in the Chicago area including phenomenal jazz bassist Dennis Carroll, jazz drummer George Fludas, pianist Seán McCluskey, arranger Josh Moshier, saxophonist Andrew Haynie, and classical trumpeters Colin Oldberg, Jean Laurenz, and Paul Floreck.
